Acrobat 6 can be used to collect and archive form data. The data can be stored in PDFs or integrated with databases. Data can be submitted online though any common CGI language. All this means document producers can create correctly formatted, secure forms that can be widely distributed then filled in and submitted using the free Adobe Reader. This approach is being pioneered by many government agencies for tasks ranging from tax declarations to gathering census information.

In this course, we look at creating PDFs with form fields and submit functions as well as collecting and integrating data collected from PDF files. We set up a simple web-based workflow that shows you the different ways you can submit and collect data entered into PDF form fields and explain and demonstrate some of the key technologies involved such as POST submits, CGI and FDF.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to create PDFs with form fields that can be submitted though the Internet using Adobe Reader. You’ll also be able to parse this data through a CGI into a simple database.
